Our story began over 50 years ago

A brief history

Our story began when the motorway came to Cumbria. Here’s how we got here…

1969

The M6 was built through our upland hill farm.

1972

We opened the famous Tebay Services; a 40-seat cafe on the Northbound carriageway.

1976

Westmorland Hotel opens, originally called ‘Tebay Mountain Lodge’.

1986

Junction 38 Truckstop serves its first breakfast to hungry truck drivers.

1992

Double up! Tebay South opens its doors for the first time.

2000

Rheged is built, telling the story of ancient Cumbria and connecting people to the artistic side of the region.

2003

We open our Farmshops at Tebay, showcasing local makers of handmade authentic foods.

2004

Our Butchers' counters open at Tebay, selling beef and lamb from our farm and local farms.

2014

We opened Gloucester Services on the M5 in partnership with the community development charity, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust.

2019

We remodelled and relaunched Cairn Lodge Services on the A74(M); a much-loved family business that had been put up for sale by the McInnes family.
